Thanksgiving…What are you thankful for?

Tom and I spent many Thanksgivings by our selves during the early years of our marriage.  Family…very far away.  My extended family was in Alaska for years then they moved back to Colorado. Several moves later, we are scattered all over, Maryland, Florida, Denver, Knoxville…  As the family as moved around, we decided that Nashville was the central location for ALL of us to meet.  So every other year we meet at our house for an amazing Thanksgiving weekend!  All are invited on the off years as well.

This is an on year…

The family started to arrive on Tuesday.  Mom, Dad and Christy.  Then Wednesday, Sam and the clan arrived.  Late Wednesday night Beth, my beautiful pregnant sister, her husband Deuce and their friend, Cameron came in from Denver.  Drew and Dara are in Florida with her Dad this year.

What an amazing time we have had so far!!  The visiting and laughter.  Watching all the kids have a wonderful time together!

Deuce cooked up an amazing dinner.  AMAZING…you don’t understand, he is brilliant!  I cook…I can get the job done…He is an artist…He started early this morning.  Spices and sauces and garlic and love and laughter.  Later in the afternoon Jen came over with Lane and Maddy.  My parents shared pictures of their beautiful house in Florida.  My father has been working on it for months.

We were treated to Turkey, dressing and all the wonderful trimmings.  My pregnant sister Beth, made an amazing Apple Pie.

Several hours later, one of my closest friends, Teddy, came over after working her LONG shift at Southwest.  She treated us to cupcakes, which the kids have devoured.  Enjoyed the Thanksgiving dinner as well.  More love and laughter, stories, thankfulness was shared.

After 2 or more hours cleaning the kitchen, mainly done by my wonderful husband Tom, we packed it in and headed off to bed…

It was a simple day, spent with loved ones, sharing our hearts, laughing, crying, bonding, cherishing every moment together!  It doesn’t happen often enough with all of us living so far away from each other, but you would never know when you walk through the front door.  That is the magic of family!  We have a BLAST!!!   Do we all agree on everything?  Politics, religion, what kind of car is the best?  Does the toilet paper on the roll hang forward or back?

No, and we have always agreed to disagree.  It is what makes us who we are.  We had 23 people for dinner tonight.  Most will stay until Saturday.  My parents and Christy will stay until Monday.  I am blessed!  It is a time of the year that I ALWAYS look forward to…

I am very thankful to my family and close friends.  I am blessed with an amazing husband and children!  I mean amazing!  I serve an awesome God.  I live in a free country.

I am blessed…I am thankful.

What are you thankful for this year?

Harry Potter!! It’s Midnight, do you know where your kids are?

I know where mine are…

Memories are being made right now!

Tonight is the opening night for Harry Potter.  Tom, Anya, Taylor and Kieran are at the midnight showing of the new Harry Potter Movie!!

Harry Potter is my husband’s favorite book series ever.  When we went to Florida a few months ago, Tom wanted to go to Disney.  That was the plan…Then he started thinking about it…We ended up at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando.  Tom was in heaven.

Anya has read the books many times.  She loves them!  It is an amazing bond between Anya and her Papa.  Taylor loves the movies.  He hasn’t read the books, not all of them, but he’s not an avid reader…we are working on it.  Kieran is reading the books, slowly…at his pace.

So in 6 minutes they will be living in their fantasy yet one more time…Where good meets evil.

I will be seeing it sometime this weekend I am sure!  You KNOW Tom will have to see the move at least one more time!!!

Are you a Harry Potter fan?

Running like a Chicken with my head cut off…

Quite an expression…Yes, I know, but that is where I am right now…

I feel like ever since I got home from San Antonio, and the “2010 Flood”,  I just can’t seem to get a grip, catch up, relax, and just be.

My house is never clean…like I would like it to be…kids really just want to do nothing this summer…not even morning chores!  Kieran has play practice 4 nights a week…Anya still has youth group stuff every Wednesday night, birthday parties, sleep overs, Taylor is at Robotics camp all week…8-3!  (I’ll detail that in another blog post…), Rowan is…well Rowan.  Tom hurt his back…Anya still taking 2 classes this summer, one to get ready for ACT’s in August.  Anya wants to get her license tomorrow!  Anya turns 16 tomorrow!  I am not really sleeping.  Busy, busy, busy!  There is so much more, but I don’t have time to write it!!  I have an appt!  So I’ve got to go!

So, I am praying about life, our family life, peace and rest and joy.  Not sure of what I want the outcome to be…just peace, rest and joy!!  I am asking that you join me in this…

:)

The ant farm…

My dear friend Karen and her husband Bruce came down to Nashville for a visit.  They live in Canada.

Let me give you a little history…

I met Karen when Tom was playing for Lari White.  I was pregnant with Taylor, who is now, 13.  She has 2 children.  Lucas who will be 17 the end of June and Molly, who just turned 14 in March!!

We were the perfect Lucy and Ethel match.

We would get together all the time, when our husbands were out of town making money.  I would pack up my kids and we would head out to the “holler”, where Karen lived, and hang…The kids always had things to do.  We made messes, we were loud, sometimes the “Clay Lady” would come over and there would be a group of mom’s with small children, and the kids would make clay somethings…Many times Mr T, her neighbor and neighborhood grandfather would come over and hang with us and tell stories, and sometimes give the kids rides in his golf cart.  He owned most of the “holler”  We went to the Chattanooga Aquarium together and had a blast.  Many many days we would just go to McDonald’s and let the kids play in the play area.  Times she would come to my house and help me organize it and we even cleaned up my messy garage and made a “play room” out there!! It was always fun.

As for many in the music business, her husband Dean, was burned out with the music industry and he and Karen decided to go back to Canada to raise their children, near their extended family.  She moved away just a day or 2 before I gave birth to baby number 3, Kieran.  It was such a sad day for me.

We have kept in touch over the years, not the greatest, as Canada was an expensive phone call.  We would email now and then.  It was always like we had seen eachother just the day before.  She came down for a visit about 6 years ago with her children.

Last fall, Tom was touring, and had a show in Niagra, about an hour from Karen’s house.  So I went up with him!  I was able to see Karen and her new husband Bruce.  We all were able to hang out for a couple of days.  We had a blast!  We went driving in wine country, checked out different wines and enjoyed the country and just caught up and made new memories!

Well, about 2 weeks ago or so, I got a message from Karen letting me know that she and Bruce were coming to Nashville.  I was so excited.  They are here this week.  They came over on Monday so that they could meet all of my children.  The last one Karen met was Lily, number 4.  Then once Tom came home from his sessions, we went out for dinner.  After dinner, they picked up Anya and Taylor and she and Bruce took them to the Predators hockey game!!

OK, back to the title of my post…

Bruce and Karen and I were sitting in my living room chatting.  As we were chatting we were watching the activitiy in the kitchen area.  All of my children were coming and going, getting something to eat, walking around, running, throwing themselves on the ground and having a temper tantrum…

For a brief moment, I saw things through her eyes.  I looked at her and said it looks like bees swarming,

no, it looks like an ant farm, the way they are all busily going about their way, at the same time!  It was hysterical!  We started laughing!

Living in the middle of the chaos, I don’t realize what it looks like.  so for that brief minute, I saw it.  It is busy, it is loud, it is constant, it is exhausting to watch and it is humorous!  To me it is normal.  To someone with 2 teenage children, 4 teenage children with a blended family, it is exhausting!

This is my life, swarming bees, busy ants, getting through each day.

It is beautiful.
