Allison Sweeney, Days of Our Lives and Nana Taylor

I was shopping at Kroger yesterday and as I was walking past the magazines, I saw Allison Sweeney on the cover of a magazine or 2…

Hurray for her, I thought to myself!!  As I strolled down the aisle with my cart , I couldn’t help but be flooded with a plethora of memories…Why, for Alison Sweeney?  Am I psychotic? Stalkerish?

No…not at all…

You see, oh but so many years ago, my Nana Taylor used to watch the soaps…you know the daytime DRAMA’S…

Well, first it was “Another World”

One time my Nana was at our house for a visit, I believe, and mom you can correct me if I’m wrong.  Anyway, Nana and her mom, my Mom Mom, were on the phone, Nana was going on about this person and their drama and that person and their drama and my mom’s eyes were getting bigger and bigger!  Who were they talking about??  Is everything alright?  Nana Taylor got off the phone, and my mom frantically asked, “Is everything alright?”  My Nana replied, “Oh, yes, we were just talking about our “soap”.

One of my favorite Nana stories!

Well, “Another World” went off the air, Nana also watched “Days of our lives”…my mom would watch Days, every now and then..and I will admit, over the years of my childhood and adulthood, I did too…  When I first got married, BC, (before children) when Tom would go out of town on tour,  I would drive to Florida and spend weeks with with my Nana’s. (They lived near each other)  Of course when you were at Nana T’s house, you watched her “shows”.  She would tape, David Letterman and “Day’s of our Lives”…

I knew and followed Bo and Hope, and Sammy, ie: Allison Sweeney, and ALL of her antics…Sammy was deceiving, and nasty…she was kniving to her sweet sister Carrie, or the everlasting feud between the Dimera’s and the Kiriakis families…I remember Alice Horton the family matriarch and Doug and Julie…and of course John and “the infamous” Marlena Evans!!

I would come home from my visits, and watch Days from time to time so when I would talk to my Nana, I could chat with her all about the story lines from Days…I loved it!  She loved it!

One year I went out to LA to visit one of my besties, Lauren Kitchens and she had a friend that was a trainer for several of the “Days” cast…He and I were chatting and I told him my story and all about my 90 year old grandmother that loved her soap, “Days”…

Well, about a month or so later, I got autographed pictures from many of the “Day’s” cast…

I’ll never forget the joy when I mailed those pics to her…Oh she was so excited!  And I just know she told her friend “Pete”, (female) all about them!

My Nana passed away several years ago…she lived 98 years, a good, full life!  I miss her terribly, but I know she is in heaven waiting for us to join her…haha!  I think of her often and her wisdom that she imparted throughout the years…   Or at least her snarkiness…

So, now watching Sammy Brady grow up and be the host of “The Biggest Loser” and seeing her on the cover of Magazines, and seeing the book that she has written, I am a big fan!  Do I still watch “Days”?  What do you think?

Whether or not you think soaps are evil, or a waste of time, or whatever positive or negative thoughts you have, I don’t really care…sorry, because the joy and the fun conversations I have had with my Nana over the years, have been one of my favorite memories!

She was a snarky, Scottish woman, very cheeky.   She told it as she saw it!

We would laugh at the story lines and we would be mad when someone we loved left the show, or laugh at some of the acting…(sorry)  It was a fun time for both of us!

It was a sweet day at Kroger…brought a smile to my heart!!

I love watching you Alison…

I miss you Nana!

Anya is heading to Africa in June with Nairobi Hope Now

My oldest daughter, Anya,  is turning 17 in June…That is huge!   She will have the opportunity to celebrate her birthday in Nairobi, Kenya!

How stinkin’ cool is that!!

She is going on a mission trip with a team of amazing people from our church, Crosspoint Community Church. When I was in college I went on a mission trip to Europe with our Choir.   It was very cool!   About a year into my marriage, I was able to go on a mission trip with my husband. We went to Russia, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, with an amazing ministry run by Jim Gilbert.  It was awesome, life changing.  Tom did mission trips to Haiti, all through high school, with a group called New Directions, as well as trips while he was in college.

As life as gone on and I have had my 6 children, my mission days have been on hold.   I want to go back out,  it just isn’t my season.

It is Anya’s time!

You can follow her journey here: Anyanairobihopenow

I am so very excited for her!!! She is going with an amazing team led by Rhonda Hewett, (you can link to her blog) has the opportunity to work with an amazing ministry run by Garry and Brenda Kean.   She and the others will be working at the Kibera Slums and other places.

Here are some pictures that Rhonda has sent me over the years.

Here is a letter that Anya has written as she is looking for support for her trip.  If you’d like to help financially you can send a check to the address at the bottom of the letter.  If you would like to help in prayer, that would be awesome, and definitely needed and appreciated.    You can follow Anya’s blog, or Rhonda’s blog and keep up to date, now and this summer.  Also they are both on twitter, @anya36 and @rhonree, you can follow their journey while they are on their trip, in real time…The blessing of technology, I love twitter!!

The letter:

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you all have had a wonderful 2011 so far! I have some exciting news. On June 3rd I am leaving on a plane to go to Nairobi, Kenya for a mission trip. I’ll be gone through the 15th. Thirteen people and I are going to be serving the men, women and children of the local slums around Nairobi (including the Kibera Slum of the movie, The Constant Gardener). We will be working with Brenda and Garry Kean and their church New Song Nairobi and Jacaranda, their sewing ministry. It is going to be a heart-wrenching, powerful, wonderful journey, and I cannot wait!

This trip is going to be my first trip out of the country so I am a little bit nervous, but very excited! We are leaving on Friday morning to fly to Chicago, from there to London and then finally to Kenya! We will be there until Wednesday the fifteenth, which means I will get to spend my 17th birthday there! Four of the people going are some of my best friends ever, three of which have never been to Nairobi either, so we shall get to experience it together. We are all very excited.

Brenda and Garry Kean are the founders of New Song Nairobi, and Jacaranda Sewing Ministries. They have been living in Nairobi for several years now and have been working with the people of the slums since they moved there. The Jacaranda sewing ministry is a group of women from the slums making and sewing many different things like purses, dolls, bags, suitcases and aprons. They then sell these items outside of Africa in places like the United States to raise money. This money keeps these people off of the street. A lot of these items will be brought back with us to sell and make money for them, if you are interested in buying something, let me know when I get back!

While our team is there, we are going to be serving many people in different ways. We will be visiting several different slums around Nairobi, talking to and praying with many different people. We are going to be working with kids in VBS and maybe even a sports camp as well. Our goal is to show these kids that they are loved not just by us, but by God as well. We will also be visiting the Jacaranda sewing ministry and teaching the women some different techniques and ways to paint their crafts. One particular thing I am excited about is the privilege of getting to help lead worship for some different people there. Needless to say, we are going to be busy.

There are two things I need help with. The first is funding. For the trip altogether, I need have $3,000 by the end of March. This is a huge amount of money for a 16 year old to raise! If you can help in any way, any amount of money would make a difference. If not, you can help me with my other need, which is prayer. $3,000 is a big goal, and I could use all the prayer I can get, both financially and for the ministry while I’m there. The checks are tax deductible, and are made out to Crosspoint Community Church, with Anya Harden in the memo, and are sent to Rhonda Hewett (our team leader) at:

Thank you so much!

Hoarders: OCD disorder? Harmless Pack rat or Collector of Things?

Yes, I had quite a few loads of Darks...

While folding many, many loads of laundry last night, (6 kids = never ending loads of laundry) I was watching a few episodes of the A&E  show “Hoarders”.

About 99% of the show, I am in SHOCK!  I am overwhelmed and at times quite disgusted.   When I first see the homes,  I think to myself, “How do these people let their house go and get to this point?”  Scary to say,  I can see HOW…

I am a home school mom.  My kids DON’T go to school 5 days a week for 8 hours a day, they are home, ALL the time.  It is a constant battle to keep the toys in their rooms and to get them to pick up their toys AFTER they are done playing with them.  I find shoes EVERYWHERE…Kieran will actually walk out of his shoes and just leave them right at the spot where he walked out of them.   When cleaning,  many times the kids will get a toy or an article of clothing 85% to it’s final destination, then they are distracted…”Oohh, shiny”…Of course they have forgotten about finishing the job, and have totally moved on…and don’t get me started on “Lego’s”!

Then there is the “Rowan Factor”

This is the Rowan Factor

… I talk a lot about the Rowan Factor; my 3 year old is in his own category of “Wild Child”.  He makes the Tasmanian devil, (Cartoon character, of course) look like the turtle from the ‘Hare and the Turtle’!  I have friends and family that can attest to this!

He is NON-STOP, changes clothes about 5 times a day…or just loves to strip and be almost naked.  Of course when he takes his clothes off, they are left wherever he chose to take them off at the time.  We can’t keep his clothes in his drawers as he will wear ALL of them in ONE day, and somehow, manage to get EVERY single piece of clothing dirty!  His toys show up, well, everywhere…I could go on and on, but he deserves his own post, actually, he deserves his own book…trust me, I am working on it…

Because of all my kids and being home all the time, that I can see how a house can get messy, I believe we live in messy a lot, not filth, but messy…Hence the title of my blog…My Beautiful Chaos.

I am only one Mom.   My kids are in life training mode…older ones help a lot; younger ones…are slowly learning how to help, and are much faster at making  new messes.  I can see how, one can get overwhelmed and lose motivation to clean it up, depression can set in, it becomes a cycle…Then add the probable OCD, and need to collect and keep and before you know it, your house looks like an episode of “Hoarders”.

My house is NOT like that, but it gives me empathy.

My heart does hurt for them, at the same time, still watching, still in  disbelief of the absurdity of the filth…

On the show, the professional organizer, who specializes in “Hoarders”, comes in and asks a few questions…some of the questions lead me to an “Ouch” moment.

She will pick up “stuff” from their house and ask,  “Do you need these?  Will these help you reach your goals that you have set?”

Oh, Crap!  I ask myself that question all the time.  The conversation in my head: “…but I have 6 kids, I might need these…they were expensive, I don’t want to throw it away.”  I couldn’t possibly go down this road…Could I???  Oh Crap!

“Wait, I have this “thing” for knitting yarn, and I am a sap for knitting magazines, and such…I can’t throw the magazines away…they have patterns in them”.

I used to collect “Parents Magazine“.   Come on, I have 6 kids…they have fantastic ideas, for parties, potty training, mom help things…I had several years worth, well more then several…One day last year, I had to ask myself that question…”Do I need these?”  I mean I freakin’ have the Internet and can google any of these “parenting” issues and instantly get my answer.  I made the choice and threw all of them away.

My husband is a drummer, a musician, so we have many old copies of “Modern Drummer” and “Electronic Musician” magazines, Then he loves a few British magazines…Well we CAN’T throw ANY of those away…They all are expensive and well, good bathroom reading, or  “chill” reading.

We have a lot…well not hoarder a lot, but a lot to me…

My 6 and 8 year old daughters have like 25-30 Barbies…that is a lot…I just told them I think they only need 3 a piece…When I told Anya, she was sad…she said, “I played with ALL of my Barbies at the same time when I was little.  You had a big long storage roller box that I kept under my bed, do that for them.”   Ok, I could do that…

It may not look like it, but I am always in de-clutter mode…I am given a lot of childrens clothes from friends,  when mine out grow them,  I try to seasonally pack up outgrown clothes and give them away.

It is a constant, to train, remind and retrain my kids to pick up after themselves.  It never is done the way I want it…

At times, I get stressed over what my house looks like and what am I teaching them.  Is it enough?

I often wonder what they think when their friends come over.  Are they embarrassed?  No they are not.  In fact, the kids/teens that come over, love my house, they say it feels lived in and full of love.  Their Peaceful Chaos.

When I watch the Hoarders show, I see what how it fractures and breaks families.  Children can’t have their friends over, they are embarrassed, or just have no room for anyone, or kids that are taken away for safety reasons…

So,  as exhausting as it is to remind,  re-remind,  re-re-remind and demand my kids help, I will continue to persevere.  I will continue to push them to keep up with their chores.  I am not their slave, as I tell them, and I want them to take pride and ownership of their house, their, “stuff”, and know how to clean when they move out on their own…They will move out won’t they?

I dream of having that decorator style house, that you see in a magazine…but that is not my reality…With kids/teens accidents happen, spilled soda or food on my carpet.  The kids will run in the house after playing outside and forget to take their muddy shoes off.  Our kitchen is in use a lot…I have 2 ginormous dogs…well, one, a 200 lb. Mastiff,

Hoarders: Angus and Rowan

Rowan and Angus: Just a boy and his dog

who thinks he is a lap dog…and a wild, sweet, smiling yellow Lab.  At night they sleep on my living room furniture…one takes the couch and one takes the giant ottoman.  They have worn down my furniture…it’s not as nice anymore.  New furniture?  I have been waiting until my kids are done making messes, but that will never happen, I know.

My house is messy, but no hoarders here,   it’s clean, it’s well worn and full of love…it is my “Peaceful Chaos”.

That, works for me.

I am headed for Bliss…

Yes, it’s true…On Wednesday, I will be heading to Opryland Hotel to #Blissdom.  I am so very excited!  I wanted to attend last year, but it filled up before I was able to sign up.  Not this year, I was ready, early, signed up right away, got my discount.  I received a package in the mail last week…Woo Hoo!

I have been mulling over what sessions I want to go to…I am trying to learn how to work with blogs…how to be a better writer, more consistent, possible vlogging.  I am doing this for my blog, and Tommy Harden’s blog, and we want to to a blog for Anya, for her photography.

I can’t wait!  I am so looking forward to meeting many amazing bloggers from all over the country!!  I am sure I will come back from this with major motivation,  a lot of ideas, and a renewed state of mind.

Blissdom 2011 has a lot to offer.  I have babysitterage lined up!  The best part…It is in Nashville!

It’s time for me to “get my Bliss on!”

Birthday Cakes…throughout the years…

We just had a “Tangled” party for Maggie and Lily…Anya made this cake…

I thought I’d post a few of the different birthday cakes this family has had over the years…

From being a new mom with my one and only, Anya,  turning 1!!  The cake was amazing!!   What was I thinking, that kind of cake at 1?  I am sure every other year has been a bit of a let down…

Or Taylor’s Racetrack cake!  I am sure that it must be because of this cake that the T, LOVES cars, fast cars, knows all about cars, and basically is obsessed with, yes…cars!

To many of the white or chocolate 9″ round, chocolate Frosting cakes…

Hey at least the plate says, “You are special today”,

because this cake is well…BORING!!

The springs in this cake seem to have broken!

Look at Maggie so patiently waiting.

But, what I lack in creativity, I make up for in taste!!  Yummy!  (If I do say so myself!)

Then there are the store bought cakes…  It was all about Thomas that year and several after…In fact here is my ginormous 2 year old son, Kieran, on a Thomas train he had for about 3 seconds.  He outgrew it within hours of the purchase!  Doesn’t he kind of remind you of the boy in the movie, “Honey, I blew up the kids!”

And the Ice Cream Cakes…(Kieran loves these…)

The wintry Igloo…(attempt)

The 9 x 11 sheet cake, still in the pan of course…  But the teens don’t care!

The amazing cake by Pam Lewis for Anya’s 16…

I love this “Construction Cake”  It was a MESSY Cake!  Made sure I had a cheap plastic table cloth and just let them dig, (get it?) Sorry…  dig in!!  Then just emptied out the truck and tied it all up and threw the mess away…easy clean up!

Plates don’t really match the cake theme here do they?  Haha!!

I love celebrating the kids birthdays…I can go overboard, renting ponies, bouncy things, going to bouncy thing places, Tea themes, beach themes, Tangled…untangled, overwhelmed, underpaid…

We have no family in town to celebrate our “big” day with, so I had decided with Anya, that I would try to make the birthday’s awesome and  fun and memorable…to try to make up for lack of family…in town.

I am asked to have my “extended families” parties at my house too!!

Lane!!

Diana is 39??? Again? (Look at Brett's face back there!!)

John's 50th! John and Rhonda with John Ford Coley...

After looking at all my pics throughout the years to find some of the cakes…I am so glad that I love cakes…Cakes mean parties..Parties mean friends, fun and amazing memories for all!!  It brings me great joy and many happy tears to look and see all the smiling faces.

My life is awesome!!
